The many jazz enthusiasts who ventured to Bishop Sutton to hear “The Panama Jazz Band” on Feb 12th were rewarded with an outstanding evening of entertainment. Professionally slick musicians who enjoy their music. “Tin Roof Blues” opened with the slow sexy saxophone of Clive Johnstone followed by the velvet tones of Bob Cloverdale on the trombone. The “St. James Infirmary” showed off the great blues voice of Alan “oggy” Hogg and the plaintive voice of the Trumpeter Tom Doughty. The banjo came into it’s own in “Panama Rag” an old favourite with the audience. Space was at a premium on the dance floor for “Girl of my Dreams”. “Dippermouth Blues”, “Stevador Stomp” and “When the Saints” took us on a roller coaster ride to a grand finale.
Everyone is looking forward to Friday March 12th when the band “The Panama Jazz Kings” playing their own unmistakable lively style of New Orleans jazz.
14. TIMSBURY JAZZ NIGHT REVIEW
Nationally acclaimed clarinettist Jeremy Huggett was given a great reception for his new band “ Shades of Armstrong”. They were such a professional, entertaining jazz band that would have done justice to Carnegie let alone Conygre Hall.
“Strictly come Dancing” came to Timsbury during such tunes as “Up a Lazy River” and “On the Sunny Side of the Street “ The silver tongued trumpet of Mike Lock added to the fundamental authenticity of the unique traditional style of the great Louis Armstrong. The rippling keys of Simon Banks were exquisite in “Pennies from Heaven” and the requested medley showed his excellent stride and boogie-woogie technique. We were treated to the old favourites “Black and Blue”, “Bank o’Town Blues” and “Wolverine Blues”. Stories told in music by great jazz musicians.
Don’t miss out. Come on Friday 26th March to hear and applaud the legendary 6-piece “BLUE NOTES” plus Hannah Wedlock from 8-11pm at Timsbury Conygre Hall.

Bishop Sutton New Orleans Jazz Night
“The Severn Jazzmen” gave us a truly entertaining night of pre 30’s jazz. From “Ory’s Creole Trombone” where Alan Bramley masterfully put his trombone through it’s paces to Martin William’s fine rendition of “Keeping out of Mischief Now” by Fat’s Waller. “At a Georgia Camp Meeting” was just right for cake walkers which encouraged the audience to take to the floor with a variety of stylish moves. The first ever published blues “Buddy’s Habit” was upbeat slick and professional. What a great night for the growing community of enthusiasts of New Orleans Trad. Style Jazz.
Come along and join in at Bishop Sutton village hall on Jan. 8th when we welcome the well known “Bob Reynolds New Orleans Bobcats”
